This has to go cold turkey

by Chua Han Au

ivory and sombre
highs and lows
a symphony,
 in the night
oh’ it was mellifluous,
how the noise

now quells

you’re ignis fatuus
you have the hair — the colour of foxes
that fragrance — deep down it was familiar —
yet obscure
struck by the blessing of the cupid
roses and white doves
weaned on the affection
or perhaps
it’s just a terribly exhausted soul
trying to find some excitement
in dole

it bemuses me
how the body works chemically —
the nerves, and how they affect the hormones

but I do know that

  love
can be aphrodisiac yet now
it ails

adolescence brings upon these weird chemicals
    in our body
this esoteric sentiment
has been morphed by picture-perfect fiction
influenced by how it’s intrinsically immaculate,
but as one begins to see the cruelty of this world
we see that tales were never accurate

hitherto I realised,
it’s not entirely a beauty
and love at first sight is undoubtedly
    one in infinity
